Various St John’s LC Church Notices in the Summer of Our Disconnect
Dear Saint John’s LC Members,
May God’s grace and peace be with you! I’ve just received four notices telling me:
1) Governor Abbott is re-instituting some anti-pandemic lock down controls due to a spike in the rates of infection in Texas. For example, he is closing the bars across the state.
2) The LCMC Texas District gathering (planned for this July 31 and August 1 in Victoria,TX) is delayed until 2021 in Victoria. Refunds will be sent out soon.
3) The District’s Annual Business Meeting for the District will be online via Zoom on Saturday, August 1st at 8:00am..
4) The International Annual LCMC gathering (planned for this Fall in Arden Hills, MN, near Minneapolis) is greatly reduced in numbers and duration. The organizers will accept only the first 250 to register, and it will be only on Monday, October 5th. They plan to make it all visible on line as well.
I’m forwarding to each of you the respective e-mails for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th items. The first one was from the Wall Street Journal, a news source that I cannot forward for copyright reasons. I would probably be tagged as a spammer if I did. I’ll probably be tagged as a spammer anyway.
Here in Dime Box, we will continue to have worship services inside the sanctuary tomorrow and in July, but I strongly encourage everyone attending to smartly spread out, respect each other’s space, stop shaking hands, wash those hands often, and stay away if even a little bit symptomatic or vulnerable.
The Church Council decided on the 18th to continue with our limited operations: Worship on Sundays and bible study gatherings if they are cautious and spread out. In July we will still cancel fellowship activities or ministries, since they bring people into close contact. We’ll wait until the Council gives the green light for such fellowship.
I’m also saddened to see all of this cancellation, but know that God is in charge. Let us be strong and wise together/apart. I’m the Parliamentarian for the LCMC, so they usually want me to attend – I will be fine without so many business meetings, but worry that this might be the first year of my life when I do not attend a live baseball game.
With the bars closed, there might be new multitudes in need of good books to read. We’ve reassembled the Church Library in a classroom by the Fellowship Hall, spilling out into the Hall, and into the church office. You are welcome to browse in there amongst the books and videos. If you take anything with you, send me an e-mail saying what you borrowed. The books above the desk are my own – please ask first about those.
Tomorrow we will take a few extra moments during our worship to celebrate our members who are graduating from high schools and colleges, so we do not plan to offer Holy Communion. So, if the closure of the bars is your only motivation to come to Communion, please come to worship anyway, be patient, and come back for the Fifth of July. We can read up on better reasons in the meantime.
